Royalty-Free Music and YouTube

June 22, 2011

The internet used to be a very blurry place with regard to licensing and copyright infringement, but it is becoming clearer now that everybody needs to have permission to use any music online. Universal recently sued MySpace for infringement on their copyrighted music and they aren’t the only ones watching the internet. Now that more and more people are using YouTube and posting their videos, the copyright laws are being enforced a lot more frequently.  Some of the repercussions of illegal music usage can be quite costly, so it pays to make sure you have the necessary licensing ahead of time.

There are a few different things that can happen to you for using music without a license. The record label can have YouTube make the audio silent for your video, have your video flagged or,  if they really want to come after you, they can get YouTube to put a monetary value on the views and you would have to forward that advertising revenue to the record label.  Not very fun options. The alternative, and the correct legal thing to do, is to obtain the proper licensing and clearly label this with your video.  Using royalty free music is the easiest way to get great music into a video without the high costs associated with gaining permission to use popular songs.
Indicating where you purchased the music license is generally the best way to avoid any kind of flagging or issues. If you do encounter a situation where somebody has flagged your video for copyright infringement, there are tools on the YouTube site to help resolve the issue. You can follow this link http://www.youtube.com/t/copyright_counter and follow the instructions to verify your music usage. Stockmusic.net provides a PDF of our license agreement on our website which you can download and fill in to send to them. Just go here: http://www.stockmusic.net/index.cfm/page/main.license and download the license for your records.
The majority of these situations are quickly resolved and your video will be unflagged and life goes on. Occasionally there are situations where further information and help is required. Stockmusic.net would be glad to help any customers who have issues and require assistance. If you find yourself in this situation, please call us at 1-866-HIPTUNES and we will help you sort it out!
