Royalty free music is any stock music that does not require on-going fees or royalties paid to the seller of the music, commonly referred to as "sync fees" or "synchronization fees". Many music companies will charge additional sync fees depending on whether the music is used for broadcast, non-broadcast, nationally, internationally, for education, for web sites etc. Another term for royalty free music is “buyout music”. The user pays a one-time fee for unlimited usage of the music (the Stockmusic.net license falls into this category of license). At Stockmusic.net we charge only $39.95US regardless of the type of usage. You can use it in your videos, films and multimedia productions over and over and will NEVER incur further charges OF ANY KIND from us.
Does this mean that the composers who created the music don't get any royalties? - No. Composers always get paid public performance royalties through performing rights organizations such as BMI, ASCAP, PRS and SOCAN based on a random sampling of music throughout the region represented by the organization. Television networks, radio stations and others that directly facilitate "performances" of music pay yearly fees to the performing rights organizations who in turn pay the composers. Under normal circumstances a TV producer, film maker or media creator who buys royalty free music does not have to pay royalties to these organizations. If the music is being used in a TV series for example, the producer will provide cue sheet information (which includes the composer, their performing rights organization, the length of the music tracks etc.) but will not be required to pay any additional fees. At Stockmusic.net we provide cue sheet information with all tracks purchased for your convenience.
As a service to our customers, Stockmusic.net submits cue sheets directly to the performing rights organizations. We have developed an easy to use web-based tool allowing customers to generate cue sheets on our website. Simply log in to the "my stockmusic" section of our website and click on the "cuesheets" tab. Simply fill out all of the information to create your cuesheet. Your cuesheet will be saved indefinitely in your Stockmusic.net account. You can print, change and resubmit the cuesheet at any time.
If you want to use royalty free music in your restaurant, retail establishment, or other public establishment, you are usually required to pay a tariff to a performing rights organization such as BMI, ASCAP, SOCAN and PRS (or other organization depending on your country) unless you have a specific performing rights agreement with the creator of the music. At stockmusic.net when you pay $39.95 to license a track to play in your establishment, we split the fee directly with the composer. Our license agreement with the composers states that they will receive their payment directly from us, rather than the performing rights organization, passing on the savings to you! Our printable general license agreement, along with your receipt constitutes proof that you have licensed music for your establishment. In some countries certain performing rights organizations (such as GEMA in Germany) will charge tariffs regardless of whether there is a direct license with the composer. Please check with the performing rights organization in your country to find out more details.
